Dear Applicant,
This email contains important information regarding new immigration regulations that might affect you if you have taken (or plan to take) the internet-based TOEFL test in order to meet the English language conditions of your offer.
If you have not taken TOEFL this email will not be of relevance to you. You also do not need to read this email if you have taken IELTS to meet your English language condition. Similarly, if you have registered for one of our pre-sessional English courses you can ignore this email.
The UK Border Agency has recently introduced a minimum English score that students must have in order to obtain a student visa to enter the country.
Your offer from the University of Sussex specified an overall score in the internet-based TOEFL as well as scores in the Speaking and Writing components. The UK Border Agency, however, now requires a minimum score in each of the four components. In order to meet the conditions of your offer and the new requirements of the UK Border Agency you will now need to achieve the following minimum scores:
Overall: 92
Listening: 21
Reading: 22
Speaking: 24
Writing: 25
The test must also not be more than two years old.
If you have taken a TOEFL test to meet the English language condition in your offer and you do not meet the above scores, I regret to inform you that we will not be able to issue you with a CAS number. You will, therefore, need to either re-take the test, take another recognised English language test (eg. IELTS) or alternatively you may be eligible to sign up for our pre-sessional English language courses. For further information on these courses please see: http://www.sussex.ac.uk/languages/english/presessional
Whilst meeting the internet-based TOEFL scores stated in your original offer letter does still meet the University’s English language requirements, I’m afraid that this is no longer enough to meet the UK Border Agency requirements and, if you need a visa to study in the UK, you will now need to meet the minimum requirements stated above.
We expect that for most of our applicants this will not present a problem, but we wanted to let you know about this change, so that you can consider your options.
Yours faithfully,
